About Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen, which is 600 meters above sea level and is tucked away in a lush mountain valley, was initially constructed as a covert outpost to stave against the growing advances of European powers into Morocco beginning in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Muslim Andalusian immigrants went to Chefchaouen during the Reconquista and the end of Islamic control in Spain to start new lives in Africa.
Chefchaouen had a reputation for being inaccessible to non-Muslims up until the middle of the 20th century, when Spanish administration over northern Morocco started.
Today, though, everything is different: travelers can’t get enough of Chefchaouen’s many attractions.
Chefchaouen’s old city’s gorgeous sky-blue painted walls and streets constructed on a mountaintop are without a doubt its most outstanding feature. It is far more serene and comfortable than Fez.
The Kasabah (fortress), the Ras El Maa river valley, and the hillside Spanish Mosque (a 30-minute climb from town) are a some of Chefchaouen’s top attractions.
